OVERCOMERS OVERCOME!

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4, NKJV)

“You are of God” means that you are born of God and belong to God. What follows this phrase then is spoken directly to every child of God. It says that the Christian, the child of God overcomes. How exciting and quite an inspiring thought!

That the Christian is an overcomer is a spiritual reality which must be lived out and ought to become a manifest testimony, rather than a mere creed religiously cited and recited. And this goal will not be realized by presumptuously waiting passively for God to show a sign or by giving up at the slightest sign of resistance. It is going to be by grace through taking steps of faith!

Christian, to be called an overcomer by God means that in His eyes you conquer, overpower, prevail, and triumph. That is the thought He thinks of you and that is what His grace is for. The Spirit of Christ which indwells you is victorious by nature and imbues you with the same character.

The word “overcomer” describes an attitude that does not capitulate and quit; strength in the inner man to prevail in a righteous thing or stand to the end against all odds in fighting the good fight of faith. It is a tenacious attitude and a challenge against indolence, ineptitude and feebleness in the face of duty.

Overcomers overcome something, that’s what they do. They think overcoming thoughts, speak overcoming words, and act with an overcoming attitude and resolve! The overcomer does not fear failure, but is steadfast in his endeavour to succeed as God has given him grace. He is inspired by Christ who did not quit in the presence of obvious aggravation and hindrances to His mission but steadfastly set His sights on the joy of successful accomplishment.

The overcomer is full of faith, being confident in the promise and the power of God. He shows courage in adversity and encourages himself in the Lord. He or she does not lament the difficulties and challenges life toss their way, but recognizing these as aspects of the reality of life on earth, they lock their focus on to the all-sufficient grace of God to overcome.

The overcomer lives moment by moment with a consciousness of the abiding presence of God who never leaves or forsake His own. Child of God, your heavenly Father will not live your life for you, but He will empower you and equip you to live it victoriously, overcoming every limitations, obstacles and set-backs you may face in all aspects of your life.

God has called you to overcome, and you are not inferior to anybody or to anything. You can live an overcoming life, because greater is He that is in you than all the enemies of your progress and success that are in the world. Overcomers never quit, but setting their affections on things that are above, they press ahead to win the prize that God’s heavenly call offers in Christ!

I pray that you will continually grow in the knowledge of who you are in Christ Jesus and strong in confidence to say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

TRIED AND PURIFIED

"For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried." ( Psalm 66:10 ) One of the certainties of our relationship with God is that our confidence in Him will be tested, tried and purified. God’s love for His children means that He also wants us to be purified. This will require trying and testing. The symbolism of our reflection passage is very interesting. Silver, an impressive shinny precious metal starts out as a lump of earth mixed with traces of silver ore. But soon it goes through a fiery refining process and from the other end emerges a precious metal. FIRST THINGS FIRST

“Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house”. (Proverbs 24:27) There is order in life. No successful completion can emerge from an ill-conceived foundation. God is not the author of confusion. The wisdom of the passage of our focus in today’s reflection is this: It impresses upon us the value of carefully planning and organising our day as opposed to simply jumping at the first thing that grabs our attention. There is a time for everything and each must be done in its proper season. First, get the fields ready and get all the outdoor preparation for cultivation done as the planting season approaches. Next, it is then time to build the house. The implication is obvious: God is interested in how we use our time. God challenges us to daily set our priorities right.
