ON A DIVINE MISSION – Part 1

Again [Jesus] said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” (John 20:21, NLT)

Misery and mischief are frequent companions of a life devoid of purpose. But Christ has delivered the believer from such lack. He has set something before us!

How very exciting it is then for us to know that it is Christ who gives us purpose and worth, just as the Father gave Him when He came into the world. The Lord does not leave you wondering “why am I alive, why am I here…” Your life of searching for meaning and purpose ended the day you accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour and became a new creation.

You have been enlisted as a vessel of God, filled with His life and His Spirit. He did not take you out of the world, rather He "sent" you into the world!

Dear Christian, your presence on earth has a divine purpose. You have been sent by Christ just as God sent Him. Christ wants to work in you and through you!

People look for meaning and purpose in others and in all manner of things and activities, and they are readily disappointed and discouraged because they are looking in the wrong places for something they can only get by looking to Christ and following Him in obedience. He is the author and the finisher of the believer’s faith. The life that satisfies and fulfills the longing of the heart is a life of faithfulness to Christ as our leader.

In one of his works, “Communion with God”, John Owen, observed that one indication of our faithfulness to Christ is “that we do not take into our hearts or value something or someone as equal to or better than Christ to do for us what we initially received Christ for”. Are you valuing something or someone equal to or more than Christ as the source of meaning and purpose in your life? Are you staying faithful to Christ as the one who has sent you?

When Jesus came into the world, He saw everything He did or did not do and defined His purpose in terms of what the Father sent Him to do (John 5:30; 6:38; 7:16; 12:49). He was determined to do the will of the Father who sent Him (John 4:34). In the same way we must be determined to define our purpose and allow or disallow things on the basis of what Christ has sent us to do.

After His work on earth was done, Jesus declared: “it is finished”! (John 19:30). He had done the work the Father sent Him to do in the world and He has finished it. He had committed His life to a divine mission, a God-given purpose. Will you follow His example today and find your life purpose in that to which He has sent you?
