YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SUPERHERO

“The aim of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.” (1 Timothy 1:5)
You don’t have to be a superhero to make a difference. It is the love of Christ filling your heart daily and driving all your actions that make you a force to be reckoned with.

Love is the most powerful force on the face of this earth. It is love that moved God to take pity on us and come to our rescue in an act of benevolence even while we were yet in transgression (John 3:16; Romans 2:4)

Every act of sincere, selfless love always defies the odds and is able to accomplish far more than the eyes can see. Genuine love does not call undue attention to itself, but has the kind of impact that touches people at the core of their existence and makes lasting impressions of goodness on them. This love acts not for what it can get but for what it can give, and leaves people fundamentally better off than it met them.

What makes love so powerful is not so much the condition of the recipient or the resulting act of its expression, but rather the condition of the heart from which it flows. So, in his first letter to Timothy, Paul not only challenged the young pastor to walk in love, but was careful to instruct him to nurture the ground that allowed that powerful, life-impacting love of God to flourish in him and flow freely through him. That ground is made of “a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith”.

God has given the believer His Spirit and love is its nature. Love is the nature of our heavenly Father and of His children too. But if the believer allows his heart to become filled with impurities, his conscience to become compromised and his faith to become pretentious, then this love that makes great impact in lives and changes the world cannot find true expression.

By the grace that God has given you, Christian, maintain “a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith”, and aim to love without dishonesty. You don’t have to be a superhero, just let the power of God’s love flow through you without stoppage.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

“Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house”. (Proverbs 24:27) There is order in life. No successful completion can emerge from an ill-conceived foundation. God is not the author of confusion. The wisdom of the passage of our focus in today’s reflection is this: It impresses upon us the value of carefully planning and organising our day as opposed to simply jumping at the first thing that grabs our attention. There is a time for everything and each must be done in its proper season. First, get the fields ready and get all the outdoor preparation for cultivation done as the planting season approaches. Next, it is then time to build the house. The implication is obvious: God is interested in how we use our time. God challenges us to daily set our priorities right. Failing this, we will find ourselves jumping from one thing to the next without any goal, and at the end of the day, our busyness would not have translated to anything of significance

TRIED AND PURIFIED

"For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried." ( Psalm 66:10 ) One of the certainties of our relationship with God is that our confidence in Him will be tested, tried and purified. God’s love for His children means that He also wants us to be purified. This will require trying and testing. The symbolism of our reflection passage is very interesting. Silver, an impressive shinny precious metal starts out as a lump of earth mixed with traces of silver ore. But soon it goes through a fiery refining process and from the other end emerges a precious metal.
